June 8th --- Become a Panhandle Butterfly House Docent or Tour Guide --- Training Class
Are you interested in educating and helping visitors gain a better understanding of butterflies, gardening, and the natural habitat in which butterflies thrive? Then you will enjoy joining our Docent and Tour Guide team at the Panhandle Butterfly House!
Docents and Tour Guides are the trained volunteers who educate visitors about Florida butterflies, butterfly gardening, and the natural habitat in which butterflies thrive.
As a Docent you will help visitors gain a better understanding of butterflies, gardening, and the natural habitat in which butterflies thrive. You greet the public, provide casual interpretations, guide visitors in the outside vivarium with our live butterflies, and manage the Butterfly House resources. Docents work Thursday, Friday, or Saturday 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM while the PBH is open. Generally docents work twice a month (full shifts) or more frequently if the docent scheduler offers split shifts.
As a Tour Guide you will work with groups, mostly children, teaching them about butterflies, their habitat, and the ecosystem in the park. Tour Guides help with school field trip tours Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, usually two to three hours as a time.
We team you to work with experienced volunteers, and continue to support your involvement by providing new, updated information wherever needed.
The key to being a successful docent or tour guide is attending the required training course. After completing the course, you will have the tools and knowledge to extend awareness of these wonderful creatures to our neighbors and visitors. Class size is limited to ensure that we can provide individual attention and training, so advance registration for the training is required.
The last training class for 2013 is June 8, 2013 from 1:30-5:00 PM at the Visitors' Information Center and the Panhandle Butterfly House in Navarre Park.

The Panhandle Butterfly House is in need of volunteers!
Do you like interacting with people?
Want to learn more about butterflies and share that knowledge with others?
Then join us and become a Panhandle Butterfly House Docent or Group Tour Guide.
Docents are trained volunteers who contribute by helping "daily" visitors gain a better understanding of butterflies, butterfly gardening, and the natural habitat in which butterflies thrive. Our docents work during the late spring and summer when we are open to the general public on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. We train you in small classes to provide individual attention and guarantee your success. Then you'll team with experienced docents, and continually receive new/updated information. Volunteer a few hours, 1 day a week, or 1 day a month. Schedules are flexible. Classes are forming for 2013. Click to contact us for more information.
Group Tour Guides:
Group tours and Kiderpillar Classes are scheduled in advance and usually on the days that the Panhandle Butterfly House is NOT open to the general public. We like to know in advance how many folks, and the general average age of the group that will be attending. We have educational materials that have been developed to aid in sharing information with our touring groups. Most of our tours involve children, though we also give adult tours to local groups. We have several presentations, with different scripts, according to the ages of our visitors.
We try to combine education with fun, teaching about butterflies and their importance to our environment as pollinators - second only to bees. We talk about how our visitors and their families can help provide a habitat for these wonderful creatures by planting a butterfly garden. We talk about food plants for the caterpillars and nectar plants for the adult butterfly. They are taught about the life cycle of the butterfly, and with the small children we read books or play games of being butterflies - this all according to the age of the group.
